light meters?

so eventually i have got a fuji 690 camera after waiting a year. hooray! a'll i need now is a light meter so i can go out into the feild and shoot. i've never used one. there are loads going on ebay for reasonable prices. what do you recommend. i think i will puchase two cheep one and use the best one.

i am looking for one thats small, simple to use and gives the f-stop, speed and ASA readings...some don't give all three so you may end up having to do mathermatics in the street and wasting photo time.

any recomendations?

    FYI - Adolph Gasser on 2nd Street in SF has several models for rent at very inexpensive rates/week and I'm sure there's a similar pro store/rental house in your area. You can try out various models in various price ranges and see what works for you.

    thanks. i don't want to go over say 40 pounds. sekonic is beyond my budget. i am wondering how well the older ones function?? just glacing at ebay i see names such western master, leningrad and gossen which go for next to nothing. there seems to be a massive JUMP in price range to the likes of sekonic and manolta. i am biased to the cheap ones for my needs. i want something acuate, simple and compact.

      If you buy a cheap meter, you'll find yourself buying another one before too long. Or as I like to say, "If you buy cheap, you'll buy twice." I bit the bullet and bought a Minolta, and I'm not sorry. Sekonics are good too. Gossen's not bad. Not familiar with the others you mentioned. A used Minolta or Sekonic on e-bay might be the way to go. Get a good meter and you'll never have to get another one.

      jon I wouldn't buy anything over than ten years old. My first used Sekonic served me several years until its measurements were off. if you aren't doing anything critical a grey card and a existing (current) digital camera is almost like a like meter and a polaroid camera.

    Jon if my memory doesn't fail me the Fuji 690 is a medium format film camera. So that being said since it also sounds like you have very little experience with a light meter, you might want to look for a simple Gossen Luna Pro. It is a analog meter, straight forward in it operation and as long as the battery is good will work like a champ for you.. I have one and used it to back up my Sekonic #58 until I was sure of the Sekonic readings.
