Hi all,
I've been working at starting my own freelance photo business. I have acquired a few jobs on my own, but I am still in a phase where I looking for more experience to add to my portfolio, and I feel I could learn a lot under the tutelage of someone more experienced. Ya know, someone to help me really learn all the ropes as it were.
I've been presented with an opportunity but wanted more information so I know what to expect. The opportunity is to join an already established small wedding and event photography business as an associate photographer. But I am curious about copyright issues in this situation. Does the company own whatever I shoot? Does anyone know how this usually works? Are there other pitfalls to be aware of?
I'd appreciate any feedback you could give me.

Re: joining a company
Thu, June 14, 2007 - 12:56 PMIt all depends what you work out with the company. I would expect as an associate, you would keep the copyright to work you shoot. But I would get that in writing. Even as a second shooter for a primary photographer, it all depends on the primary photographer and what is worked out with them. Sometimes they might want you to show the photo credit as "Shari for XX Studio" so it's clear you were working with them. Some will just let you have the credit and others will not give you any credit at all.
Good luck. I hope to do the same thing this summer. And more than copyright, I'm after experience working with an excellent photographer and business person. But of course, I'd like the copyright too. -

Re: joining a company
Thu, June 28, 2007 - 5:27 PMMost of the time you can kiss copyright or even the rights to use images for portfolio goodbye. You are trading that in fro experience and also contacts you make because of your association. That said tis not the case always but when I was getting going in Italy there was no such thing as keeping anything !!!
